As community awareness of sustainability grows we need to ask a question: what is sustainable? To really tackle this question a systems thinking approach is needed that includes all elements of the system in which we live. Transport is a vital component of this system and of the Australian way of life, particularly for providing us with the things we consume, such as food. But is our way of life--and the food we eat--sustainable? Examining 'Food Miles' helps us to address that question, and we might not like the answer!

Dr Matthew Gray has more than 10 years experience teaching and researching in environment and sustainability issues, and in 2006 became sustainable transport officer with the Queensland Conservation Council. He currently teaches at Qld University of Technology. He will tackle the question of "Food Miles: A road to nowhere?".
