28th December 2007Feral Pigs in Morayfield
Feral Pigs in MorayfieldWho would have thought that within 2km of the Morayfield shopping centre that there would be a feral pig problem. During 07 we trapped 22 pigs. The pigs were causing massive damage in amongst our plantings. Uprooting trees and stirring up the mulch which seemed to make the weeds grow faster. Many thanks to Tim "the pig man" for loaning us a trap and removing the pigs. Ed Surman

12th November 2007National Recycling Week 12 - 18 November
National Recycling Week 12 - 18 NovemberNational Recycling Week was started by Planet Ark to encourage all Australians to improve their recycling habits. This year Recycling Week has two complementary aims. The first is to link the benefits of recycling to the fight against global warming. Recycling aids in the fight against global warming by reducing the amount of new materials we use to sustain out lifestyle. Did you know? Manufacturing plastic from recyclable materials uses 30% of the energy required to make plastic products from fossil fuels (oil, gas and coal). Recycling one tonne of plastic saves enough energy to run a refrigerator for a month Recycling aluminium cans saves 95% of the energy required in primary production. Recycling just one aluminium can saves enough energy to run a TV set for 3 hours. Australia leads the world in newspaper recycling, with over 75% of newsprint recycled. This represents a potential yearly saving of more than 1.2 million tonnes of greenhouse gases and 140 million litres of water. When organic material, like food scraps and garden cuttings ends up in landfill (that is, is not recycled), it breaks down without oxygen and creates methane. Methane is a greenhouse gas 20 times more powerful than carbon dioxide. The second aim is to encourage individuals and businesses to Recycle More and Recycle Better. Research conducted by Pollinate Green for Planet Ark, and sponsored by Bartercard, shows that about 50% of businesses recycle any of the glass, metal and tin cans and plastics used on their premises. It’s great that these businesses are recycling but there’s still room for improvement. That research also showed that 80% of people wrongly believed they can put drinkware glass in their home recycling. As little a 5 grams (the size of a 10 cent piece) of this glass is enough to contaminate an entire tonne of recyclable bottle and jar glass – sending it to landfill.
